Life After Doom
Lent 2025

Lent Worship at Lynnewood

The World is on Fire and We’re all DOOMED!  We’ve heard this, or some version of it, a thousand times. Some of us may have dismissed it as pessimistic naysaying.  Yet, deep down we’ve probably all felt it’s true.  We are living through a time of unprecedented upheaval.  There is climate change, war, refugee crises, social and political uncertainty, and personal anxiety.  What will happen? Will we survive? What kind of world will our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren inherit?  Is there anything we can do as people of faith? Based on the book  Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian McLaren, we will move through despair and grief to hope, faith, action. Together, we will find the courage to face reality, reclaim our spiritual tools, and rediscover the transformative power of love, faith and community.

Lent Devo 1 - Climate + Faith

In virtually every transformative movement in human history – the abolitionist movement against slavery, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, the movements for women’s suffrage, labor protections, dismantling apartheid in South Africa, the list goes on – in each of these cases, people of faith have been at the center of the action. Catalysts. Laborers. Visionaries. And now, as we confront what is arguably the greatest challenge in human history, God is calling us all to step up once more.

Lent Devo 2 - Wendell Berry and The Sabbath Poetry of Lent

In this Lenten devotional, biblical texts walk hand-in-hand with Berry’s sabbath vision of the natural world, and together they suggest simple, accessible practices you can try yourself, with your family or friends, or with your congregation. All you’ll need is your favorite Bible and Wendell Berry’s This Day: Collected and New Sabbath Poems (the poems may also be found online). Week by week, as the light continues to lengthen, we’ll walk through the woods together toward Easter morning, keeping sabbath as we go.

Lent Devo 3 - Into The Wild : A Family-Friendly Devotional on Henri Matisse and the Season of Lent

In this Lenten devotional, we take this adventure with Henri Matisse, one of the most daring, infl uential, and beloved artists in modern history. From his childhood growing up in a small town in France to what he called his “masterpiece,” the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, Matisse explored faith and wildness throughout his life.
